How TCM Acupuncture works
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to treat all kinds of dis-eases. Its strength and efficacy comes from its philosophy on how the body functions as a whole and how the energy pathways are viewed and used to identify and treat patterns of disharmony within the body.
The body is designed to operate optimally in homeostasis (when the body is in internal balance). When this balance is disturbed, the energy pathways are disturbed and symptoms start to appear. When specific symptoms are grouped together, they form a pattern. Disruption of the energy pathways can come in many forms. There can be too much energy (headaches/ migraines) or too little energy (depression, tiredness). Perhaps the energy is flowing in the wrong direction (nausea/vomiting), it's failing to hold organs in place (prolapse) or is stuck and cannot flow freely (pain). Regardless of the condition you are seeking to address, as your Acupuncturist my first priority is to identify the pattern of disharmony (this is your diagnosis in terms of TCM) and then treat the pattern. As we bring your body back into balance (by treating the pattern), symptoms (pain, headache, menstrual problems etc.) start to resolve and you start feeling better. The patterns are treated by stimulating the body at carefully chosen Acu-points, specific points on the body that achieve specific reactions. While needles are the primary stimulation used, I offer various needle-free treatment options. During your Initial Appointment we explore all symptoms your body is presenting. I will check your pulse, look at your tongue, we will talk about your stools, urine, sleep, diet, menstruation and many other factors that can be the cause or trigger for your health concern. By the end of the intake you will have a firm understanding of what is causing your issue from a TCM perspective and what you can do at home to relieve or prevent further triggers. |

FAQ
Do the needles hurt?
Often you don't feel the needles at all, other times it may feel like a bee sting. Very rarely do they actually hurt, and when that happens, I remove them right away. Most patients are pleasantly surprised that once the needles are inserted they don't feel then at all, and can relax and even fall asleep!
How long are needles retained?
Anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes, depending on your pattern, and how much stimulation is required.
Why do I need to keep the needles so long?
It takes about half an hour for your energy to cycle through every meridian system in your body.
How many treatments do you need to see results?
The number of treatments depend many factors, including what the health concern is, how long you've been experiencing it, how severe it is, whether there are underlying conditions that are causing it etc. 6 to 8 weekly treatments are usually recommended to start, expecting to see small changes as early as the first session. Treatments are tailored based on your feedback: how you felt after the previous treatment and how effectively your body was able to integrate the changes.
